About us

The Instituto Cervantes library was created in 1991 and inherited the library of the Instituto de España, which opened in London in 1946.

Its collection includes books, videos, CDs and DVDs about Spain and Latin America.  The Instituto Cervantes library periodically buys items for its collection and some are also donated by individuals and organisations.

The majority of its collection is in Spanish but there are also books and films in the other official Spanish languages (Catalan, Galician and Basque) as well as English.

The most important sections are:

  • Books about history, art, philosophy, politics, enconomics and sociology
  • Children’s literature
  • Works in English
  • Cinema, films and documentaries (VHS, DVD).
  • Spanish and Latin American music.
  • Newspapers and magazines
